Just So You Know: Essays of Experience
Edited by Hanan Issa, Durre Shahwar, and Özgür Uyanık

Parthian Books, £9.99

A young woman weaves her experience of abuse into the folklore of her ancestors. A student addresses his OCD by writing letters to it. A Paralympic medallist reflects upon his journey into a challenging new lifestyle. From language politics to neurodivergence, cultural heritage to sexual identity, from immigration to race, these are insights shared with great care, sincerity, and often humour.

Join The Dark Philosophers to discuss this new collection of essays with voices from across Wales that we all need to hear. Try to read the book in advance if possible, but don’t worry if you can’t – we’ll read passages aloud during the session.

All welcome, especially those new to writing from Wales. Feel free to contact group convenor Casi Dylan with any questions:

‘In these pages, stories, issues and lives that have all too often been swept under the carpet are brought into the light. It is writing that is carefully crafted, always resisting the temptation to simplify and clean-up difficult topics. Wales is a constant – as home, as a point of arrival and departure – but these personal narratives challenge us to think anew.’

  • Darren Chetty, author and contributor to The Good Immigrant

The Dark Philosophers is an open reading group which brings the literature of Wales out of the shadows. Encompassing writing in Welsh and English, contemporary and ancient, rural and urban, we are building a reading list as expansive and complex as this small nation itself.
