All welcome | Croeso i bawb

This dark comic novel presents the world of the South Wales ‘Terraces’ through the eyes of the ‘most reckless pack of sods you’ll ever see’. Love, power, dreams and their destruction: all are laid bare under Gwyn Thomas’ equally lyrical and savage dissection. Published in 1947 as the ‘last gasp of the first violent mood’ of creation in which Thomas began documenting the aftermath of the great strikes and economic depression, this story becomes our starting point for a timely discussion on aloneness and togetherness.

If you can, try to get hold of the edition from Parthian’s Library of Wales series, published in 2008. Second-hand copies are available online, and there’s a Kindle edition too.

Any questions, feel free to contact group convenor Casi Dylan on

The Dark Philosophers is a regular, open reading group which aims to bring the literature of Wales out of the shadows. Encompassing writing in Welsh and English, rural and urban, contemporary and ancient, we are building a reading list as expansive and complex as this small nation itself.

Gwyn Thomas was born in Porth, in the Rhondda Valley, in 1913. After a scholarship to Porth County School he went to St Edmund Hall, Oxford, where he read Spanish. Mass unemployment and widespread poverty in South Wales deepened his early radicalism. His many published works of fiction include The Dark Philosophers (1946); The World Cannot Hear You (1951); and Now Lead Us Home (1952).

Casi Dylan is the Cultural Activities Coordinator at the University of Glasgow. As well as The Dark Philosophers, she runs a monthly Welsh-language reading group as part of the Cymry Glasgow community. A regular contributor to the literary magazine O’r Pedwar Gwynt, her piece Reimagined Communities: An Introduction to Welsh Writing was recently published by Words Without Borders.
